have heard it said that our children are our Nation’s
greatest resource. In our public school system this is taken
quite literally. Our public school system began in the upper mid-west
as formal preparation of children for factory work to support
America’s industrial revolution. Reading, writing
and arithmetic made up the core curriculum which we now think of as
traditional education. Girls were taught home economics
because a stable, productive home life made for happier, more
productive factory workers. Current trends in our public education system are called “progressive.” Instead of focusing on the 3 R’s, classroom work has moved toward socialization and indoctrination, intended to make sure that our children fit into society’s norms. Programs familiar to us includeCharacter Counts, Dare, No Child Left Behind, Safe-Sex, Tolerance, and the like. Progressive education concepts have also impacted text books on history, social studies, etc. Strong religious convictions are discouraged, particularly Christian ones, because they stand in the way of “fitting in” to society as our public education system defines it. Our school at Christ the King trains our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord for their everlasting salvation, a work that is first and foremost the God-given responsibility of each child’s fatheror guardian. This is the essential difference between public education and true Christian education which we do in support of the Christian family. We do not neglect the 3 R’s, nor do we give short shrift to history, social studies or any of the other academic subjects. Our focus is not that our children fit in to the world. Christ himself teaches that his sheep are in the world, but not of it, in fact, cannot be of it. Our children come to understand the world from God’s perspective, which we have from the Holy Scriptures. Godly understanding frees them tobe model citizens. We work to make our school physically safe, but we also work to make it a spiritually safe so that our children may grow in wisdom and understanding while not being constantly bombarded by the world. Why? Because basic training in combat is too late. Children need solid foundation in spiritual skills before facing the enemy. Children who know the world from God’s perspective are not naive, as some would say, they are prepared. Prepared to reach into the world speaking theGospel that many may be saved. Prepared to reach out from the secure vantage point of being a child of God and possessing everlasting life. Prepared and equipped with the armor of God.
